Space Law

Space Law in India is guided by the Indian Space Policy, 2023, international agreements such as the Outer Space Treaty, 1967, and regulations issued by space authorities such as IN-SPACe. These laws regulate space exploration, satellite operations, scientific research, commercial space activities, and the peaceful use of outer space. They establish legal principles for activities conducted beyond Earth’s atmosphere. The primary objective of space law is to ensure that outer space is used peacefully, responsibly, and for the benefit of humanity. Space laws regulate satellite communication, remote sensing, navigation systems, launch vehicles, scientific missions, and commercial space ventures while preventing harmful activities such as weaponization of space and unauthorized exploitation of celestial bodies.

This sector is highly important because space technology plays a major role in communication, weather forecasting, navigation, defence, disaster management, scientific research, and economic development. Satellites support essential services such as mobile communication, internet connectivity, television broadcasting, GPS systems, and climate monitoring. Legal regulation ensures safe and coordinated use of these technologies. One of the most significant aspects of Space Law is international cooperation and responsibility. Countries conducting space activities must follow international treaties and ensure that their activities do not harm other nations or the space environment. Space laws also regulate liability for damage caused by space objects and promote peaceful scientific collaboration between nations.
